Given the technological advances in our society today, the ease of access to information and access to our family & friends, has reshaped our lives. Devices like the cell phone, has given us more to do than just saying, “Hey, what’s up?” or “I’m running late.” Now we can check news headlines, weather alerts, trade stocks, send pictures, text message and the (ugh), two way.
Now I want to state for the record, that I empathize with my peers that use the, “I have children” card. But, if that is the case, then why does said child’s phone have more numbers, functions and accessories than are necessary? I mean, if it is for, “emergencies”, then in my opinion it only needs to be able to dial two numbers (911 & the parents).
Do they delude themselves into believing that they are well aware of the activities of their offspring? I ask you, how much of this concern is acted upon when both child and parent are at home. Are they both within the other’s peripherals or are they seeking the solace of their designated dens. The validity of that argument is diminished based on this reality.
Now I have taken into account, that the cell phone is an integral and common part of our lives. But I cannot find any reason for its inception into the classroom. If one would step back and really look at any advances. They would realize that many of them would not have been possible, if the inventors or their teacher’s, had to compete with, someone’s byproduct, which lacked the respect for others. Yet the these tech savvy individuals can operate every function of their communication devices, with the exception of, silent, vibrate, mute, or off and pray tell they think about key tone volume while texting in class.
Yes, I know I sound harsh, but you see as a college student, I cannot take this lightly. It irritates me, when in the middle of receiving instructions or discussing a topic, to be interrupted, because of someone's lack of consideration, planning or respect. I am not paying tuition to listen to them explain why lil’ Trey shouldn’t put peanut butter in his sister’s nose, or to hear them talk their spouse through re-heating mac n cheese. Nor do I want to hear that their child wore a thong and makeup to class (deal with him when you get home). Noo!! that can’t happen; They must force myself and others into their world on during our time of learning and disrupt the betterment process.
Whenever, Clark Kent changed into Superman and heeded the call for help did he disrupt the flow of the Daily Planet? Heck No! He found a spot that disturbed no one. Guess what? No one noticed he was gone, and he was saving The Planet. There has to be a responsible teaching on this, especially teaching by example. Then maybe cell phones can merge harmoniously into society and the classroom.
